FRESNO, Calif. - Lucia Tallo and Katharina Winterhalter both lost in the first round of the singles qualifying on Tuesday at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, being played this week in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Tallo, currently ranked 76th in the nation, was bounced by No. 41 Maja Kovacek of New Mexico 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. But she came back in the consolation bracket later on Tuesday and pulled off a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over 69th-ranked Barbara Orlay of North Carolina State.
A first-team All-WAC honoree in both singles and doubles last year, Tallo will take on 79th-ranked Megan Rancette of Iowa on Wednesday morning in the second round of the consolation draw.
Winterhalter dropped her first round match to No. 31-ranked Carolin Walter of Baylor by scores of 6-3, 6-2. In her consolation match, the junior struggled mightily and fell 6-0, 6-0 to 55th-ranked Kelly Anderson of Georgia Tech.
"I was happy with the way Lucia came back in her consolation match after losing in the morning," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "She is still going to be playing a lot of very good players in the consolation, many who are ranked above her. So there is still the chance for solid wins and solid competition.
"As for Kat, it was just a tough day for her. She wasn't sharp, and against competition this good, if you are just a little off your game you will get beat. But Kat's track record is obvious. She won for us last year, and she'll get better and will improve as the fall goes along."
The All-American Tournament is the biggest of the fall season. It includes a 128-player singles and 64-team doubles pre-qualifying draw played at UCLA. Those feed into a 64-player and 32-team qualifying tournament played at the Riviera Country Club. The 32-player and 16-team main draw begins play Thursday.
