Tallo Reaches Semifinals of Women's Fall Desert Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - Lucia Tallo won her only singles match on Saturday and advanced to the semifinals of the Women's Fall Desert Collegiate Classic, being played this weekend in Palm Springs, Calif.
Tallo, the tournament's fifth seed, won her quarterfinal match when her opponent, Baylor's Klara Zrustova, retired with an injury after she dropped the first set 6-1. The win moves Tallo into a semifinal matchup with fourth-seeded Caroline Raba of Pepperdine on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The only other Bulldog still alive in the main draw of singles entering Saturday was Lucia Sainz. But she lost her quarterfinal match to No. 2-seeded Anka Anastasiu of USC 6-1, 6-4.
Sainz was also involved in doubles, as well. She and partner Courtney Jantz reached the semifinals with an 8-4 win over Tracy Lin and Alex McGoodwin of UCLA. That was as far as Fresno State's tandem would go, however. They fell in the semifinals to Laura Gordon and Elizabeth Lumpkin 8-5.
It was still a solid result for a duo that had played only one match together entering this fall season. Sainz and Jantz recently reached the finals of the ITA Northwest Regionals before their semifinal showing this weekend.
Three Fresno State players are still alive in the back draw (consolation) singles bracket. Katharina Winterhalter won twice while Jantz posted one victory and will play quarterfinal back draw matches on Sunday. By virtue of her loss in the quarterfinals, Sainz also will finish up the tournament in the back draw.
The Women's Fall Desert Collegiate Classic is the final tournament of the fall season for the Bulldogs.
