FRESNO, Calif. - Paced by an eight-run offensive attack and a scoreless effort over the final eight innings by the pitching staff, Fresno State downed Cal Poly 8-2 Tuesday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs snapped a brief two-game losing streak to improve to 2-2 while the Mustangs lost for the first time in their last eight games to drop to 7-3-1.
Cal Poly raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single by Billy Saul and a run scoring double by Chaillon Tietje off Fresno State starter Michael Cooper. After a lead off walk in the second to Josh Mayo, Cooper set the next 11 men down in order before a two-out walk in the fifth to Brandon Roberts. Cooper was then lifted for junior lefty Gil Infante who retired Matt Guiliano on a lineout to end the inning.
The Bullldogs evened the game in the second on run scoring singles by senior infielder Chris Patrick and freshman outfielder Nick Moresi. Fresno State added two more in the third and three in the third to hold a 7-2 advantage after four innings. Moresi and sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett led the Bulldog offense with two hits apiece. Robnett drove in a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-run single to highlight the rally. Junior infielder David Gomez drilled a pinch-hit RBI double into deep center field to plate the Bulldogs' eighth run in the seventh.
Fresno State sophomore righthander Matt Garza (1-1) tossed three scoreless innings in relief to earn his first victory in his last eight decisions dating back to last season. Garza scattered three hits over his outing while striking out two.
Cal Poly's Quinn McGinnis (0-1) picked up the loss after surrendering two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk in one inning of relief.
The Bulldogs embark on their first road trip of the season this weekend when they face UCLA in Los Angeles. First pitch on Friday is 5 p.m. with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday.
