LOS ANGELES - Christian Vitters hit a game-winning RBI single with two outs in the top of the tenth inning to lift Fresno State to a 3-2 win over UCLA Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bulldogs improved to 3-4 on the season while the Bruins lost their first game of the year to fall to 3-1. With the win, Fresno State snapped a 12 game losing streak to UCLA dating back to 1975.
Senior outfielder Tom Shannon was hit by a pitch with two out and nobody on in the tenth to start the rally. With Vitters at the plate, Shannon stole second to set up the go-ahead hit off Bruins' reliever Adam Simon (0-1) who picked up the loss. Vitters also socked his first collegiate home run to lead off the fifth inning off Bruins' starter Bryan Beck.
Fresno State sophomore righthander Toby Girazian (1-0) retired the side in order in the bottom of the tenth to earn his first victory of the season.
Bulldog starter Michael Cooper retired the first 12 batters in a row before issuing a leadoff walk to Bruins' infielder Wes Whisler in the fifth. With one out, designated hitter Brett McMillan collected UCLA's first hit of the game with a two-run homer to right field. Cooper set career highs going six innings while striking out six.
The Bulldogs answered right back in the sixth. Sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett laced a one-out double down the right field and came around to score on a pinch-hit RBI single by junior David Gomez. Robnett went 1-4 on the day and has hit safely in all seven of Fresno State's games this season.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday when they play host to UC Irvine at 6:30 p.m.
