POWAY, Calif. - No. 16 Fresno State took a 1-0 loss on the chin to 20th-ranked Oregon in the second game of the day at the 14th Annual Campbell/Cartier Tournament.
Missed opportunities in the second, fourth and sixth by the Bulldogs allowed the Ducks to stay in the thick of things. Oregon capitalized with a two-out RBI single by left fielder Kayleen Hudson in the top of the seventh to knock in the lone run of the evening.
Junior All-American Jamie Southern took the loss after allowing one run on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts to fall to 3-1 on the year. Oregon's Ani Nyhus improved to 5-2 after scattering five hits, a walk and striking out six.
Senior designated player Lori Hoffman was the top 'Dog after going 2-3.
The Bulldogs had three scoring opportunities elude them.
In the second, Hoffman led off with a single to left field. With the next two batters failing to advance her, sophomore third baseman Veronica Green drew a walk to put runners on first and third. However, junior first baseman Shasta Lewis took a called third strike to end the inning.
In the fourth with two outs, freshman catcher Nichole Willis lined a single up the middle and junior second baseman Leticia Pacheco followed with a single to left field. Green then grounded out to end the scoring threat.
In the sixth with one out, sophomore All-American shortstop Christina Clark hit a shot into right field and advanced to second when Hoffman roped a shot through the left side. Willis was robbed of an extra base hit to right center when Duck second baseman Erin Goodell leaped up and stabbed the drive. Pacheco then reached on a fielder's choice but forced out senior right fielder Mitzi Ing, who came in to pinch run for Hoffman, at second.
Fresno State continues tournament play tomorrow when it meets No. 4 Washington at 5:30 p.m. and Ohio at 8:00 p.m.
