FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State wraps up what has been a difficult February schedule this weekend at the UNLV Invitational, being played at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas.
The Bulldogs (3-1) have won three in a row, including an upset victory over then-No. 4 California last week. The win was the program's first over the Golden Bears in 13 opportunities and was the highest ranked team Fresno State has ever defeated.
As a result of the victory, Fresno State vaulted to 14th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, released Tuesday. It is the highest the Bulldogs have been in the polls since February 2002.
Other teams participating at UNLV this weekend are No. 27 Tulane, No. 37 UNLV, No. 38 Oklahoma State, No. 63 Washington State and unranked Boston College, Kansas and Northern Arizona.
Fresno State opens play Friday at 10 a.m. against Boston College. Should the Bulldogs win, they will take on the winner of the Washington State/Oklahoma State match on Saturday.
Jelena Pandzic has helped pace Fresno State thus far, winning all four of her dual matches at No. 1 singles. She upset second-ranked Raquel Kops-Jones in the Bulldogs' victory over California, a victory that helped Pandzic, a freshman, to debut at No. 29 in the national singles rankings.
Fresno State has not played a home match since the opener on Jan. 25, a 5-2 victory over TCU. Since, the team has tackled three nationally-ranked opponents, each away from hom. The Bulldogs' next home contest is March 6 against Loyola Marymount at 10 a.m.
Before then, however, Fresno State will have to tackle top-ranked Stanford on March 3 in Palo Alto.
