FRESNO, Calif. - John Mayberry Jr. clubbed two of Stanford's five home runs to lead the third-ranked Cardinal to a 13-4 win over Fresno State Saturday at Beiden Field. Mayberry Jr. belted solo homers in the fifth and sixth to account for his second and third round trippers of the year. In the sixth, he went back-to-back with Danny Putnam who tallied his first home run of the season.
Stanford improved to 4-1 while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-1.
Fresno State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a run scoring groundout by freshman outfielder Nick Moresi. Stanford regained the momentum in the top of the third plating six runs on five hits while sending 10 men to the plate. A two-run home run by Chris Carter and a three-run blast by Jed Lowrie off Fresno State starter Matt Garza highlighted the rally. Garza (0-1) allowed six runs on seven hits over three innings to record the loss.
Stanford's Jeff Gilmore (1-0) won his first game of the season, striking out eight batters while scattering three runs (two earned) on six hits in six solid innings of work. Blake Holler relieved Gilmore and went the final three innings to notch his second save of the year.
Sophomore Kent Sakamoto was one of three Bulldogs to log multi-hit performances going 2-5 including a two-run single in the fifth. Senior infielder Kyle Wilson and sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett also had two hits apiece.
The two teams wrap up the series with the rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m. Fresno State junior righthander Matt Scott (0-0) is scheduled to oppose Stanford righty Mark Jecmen (1-0, 1.80).
