Equestrian Dominates Competition On Second Day Of Western Show

TULARE, Calif. - Fresno State again dominated a five-team competition at the Tulare County Fairgrounds, finishing first with 40 points, 23 points ahead of the reserve champion, Cal Poly, with 17. College of the Sequoias was third (13), Nevada fourth (8) and Stanford last with zero points.
The Bulldogs won each class of the show, with junior Taylor Mason again capturing the high-point rider title. Three riders qualified for Regionals, including Mason in Reining, and seniors Abigail Kirchert and Shannon Morrison in Intermediate Western Horsemanship.
In the Reining competition, Mason was first, senior Christy Webb third, senior Laine Hendricks fourth and junior Elizabeth Knapp sixth. Senior Amy Reed finished first in Novice Western Horsemanship and senior Andrea Crisp was fifth.
Kirchert nabbed first in Intermediate Stock Seat B after a second-place finish Saturday, while sophomore Jessica Miller was second and Morrison fourth. Junior Kayla Merritt again captured first and senior Brenda Donat third in Intermediate Stock Seat A.
Sophomore Anna Sanford finished first in Advanced Western Horsemanship. Knapp captured first in Open Western Horsemanship, with Mason in second, senior Jessica Frazier in fourth, Hendricks in fifth and Webb in sixth.
Sunday's win put the Bulldogs at 114 team points in the region, a commanding lead ahead of College of the Sequoias, the second place team, with 48 points.
