Fresno, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Fresno State softball team utilized a key hit and had some luck bounce its way in a 3-2 victory over Utah at the 2004 Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic late this afternoon.
Trailing 2-0 after two innings of play, senior center fielder Mitzi Ing collected a two-run triple in the bottom of the third before a dropped fly ball by Utah allowed the eventual winning run to cross home plate.
Starting Bulldog pitcher Amanda Wolf pitched 2.2 innings as she allowed two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out four. Sophomore right-hander Laura Ferreira came into the game in the top of third and struck out the only batter faced before closing the door on the Utes with a one-hit, four strikeout performance in the final 4.1 innings of play.
Utah collected its two runs in the top of the first on a RBI single by shortstop Glennis Donnelly and a RBI double by first baseman Ivette Hernandez.
Fresno State, which was held to three hits while committing two errors, used a clutch hit by Ing to tie the game up 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Junior left fielder Porsha Finley led the inning off with a walk before being safe at second on a Ute error as senior right fielder Lori Hoffman reached safely on a fielder's choice. After freshman catcher Nichole Willis and junior second baseman Leticia Pacheco struck out looking, Ing tripled to left center to score Finley and Hoffman. Sophomore third baseman Veronica Green then hit a deep fly to left field but Ute left fielder Lynsey Wall dropped the initial catch which allowed Ing to score safely.
Ute pitcher Sam Schroeder, who took the loss and fell to 4-2 overall, tossed a three-hitter while walking four and striking out two.
Fresno State (20-7) will close out tournament play at the 2004 Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against defending national champion and top-ranked UCLA.
