AUSTIN, Texas - Fresno State concluded its final day of play at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate in 15th place (309-295-298) (+10). Brigham Young captured the title with 858 (281-285-292) (+4), two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Texas Christian with 860 (284-283-293) (+5).
Seniors Chad Spencer (76-71-75) and Jeremy Moreno (76-73-73) led the Bulldogs, both tying for 38th with 222. Junior Ryan Carter improved his final round, climbing from 66th to tie for 53rd after matching par (81-73-72) to conclude with 226.
Freshman Dan Buell dropped four places to tie for 73rd after shooting 78 his final round (76-80-78) for a total of 234. Sophomore Gunnar Avinelis completed his first varsity collegiate competition in 79th, shooting 243 (85-78-80).
"Our game was just off this tournament," said head coach Mike Watney. "Golf is a funny game; we won last week and didn't do so well this time around, and we could end up winning next weekend in Santa Cruz (Calif.)."
Watney said the Austin Country Club has Bermuda greens, which can make a difference in a player's game if he usually plays on Bent greens, as is the case for Fresno State. But, he said, this was only a minor factor contributing to the team's performance.
Watney expects the Bulldogs to step up their game next weekend when they travel to Santa Cruz, Calif., to compete in the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State.
"We have to regroup quickly, but we're looking forward to Pasatiempo (Golf Course)," Watney said. "We should do much better there."
