SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Fresno State finished sixth (288-286-291=865) out of a 15-team field at the Western Intercollegiate, hosted by San Jose State. Colorado captured the title with 852 (286-276-290), two strokes ahead of California, with 854 (284-278-292).
Bulldog freshman Dan Buell (77-73-64) played a standout final round, shooting 64 - one stroke off the course record of 63 - tying him for a ninth-place finish along with UTEP's No. 7 ranked Chris Baryla, after beginning today's round tied for 53rd.
Senior Chad Spencer, one stroke shy of Buell's 214, tied for 14th place with 215 (70-69-76). Sophomore Mark Modglin tied for 36th with 221 (71-75-75) and junior Ryan Carter dropped six places to tie for 45th after shooting 76 his final round, totaling 223 (78-69-76). Senior Jeremy Moreno finished 65th after starting the day in 53rd, shooting 78 for a total of 228 (70-80-78).
"There's huge excitement for Dan Buell today," head coach Mike Watney said. "He only missed the chance to shoot 63 by 5 feet on the last hole."
Aside from Buell's performance, Watney said the team wasn't overly enthusiastic about its sixth-place finish, however, it did have an important victory.
"We beat UTEP by one stroke and Colorado State by seven," he said. "That's important for our region."
The Bulldogs return to action April 17-18 in Stanford, Calif., for the U.S. Intercollegiate, hosted by Stanford.
