FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Katharina Winterhalter was named the Western Athletic Conference's women's tennis Player of the Week. This is her first honor of the spring.
It also marks the second week in a row and fourth time in the past six weeks that a Bulldog has claimed WAC Player of the Week honors. Winterhalter joins teammates Jelena Pandzic (Feb. 23), Lucia Tallo (March 1) and Lucia Sainz (March 22) as Fresno State players who have earned WAC honors since January. In addition, Winterhalter was named WAC Player of the Month for October.
A sophomore from Heitersheim, Germany, Winterhalter went 3-0 in both singles and doubles as 13th-ranked Fresno State defeated Kansas State, UC Santa Barbara and No. 36 Arizona. The sophomore did not lose a set in three dual matches and helped the Bulldogs -- the highest ranked team in the WAC -- improve to 13-2 on the season, with wins in the last seven. Of the singles wins, the most impressive came against Debbie Larocque of Arizona, a 7-6 (1), 7-5 decision that led Fresno State to a narrow 4-3 victory at the UA.
Winterhalter has won seven singles matches in a row and is 21-7 (11-3 dual). Her 21 overall victories is tops on the team.
In doubles action, the sophomore teamed with Lucia Sainz for three wins. The duo is now 17-5 overall, 9-4 in dual matches, and has won seven in a row. Their 8-2 win over Arizona's tandem of Larocque/Jakolew gave Fresno State the doubles point it needed in a 4-3 win.
OTHERS NOMINATED - Lauren Archer, Rice and Ilona Sommers, Tulsa.
