SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sophomore righthander Rudy Quinonez struck out five over three scoreless innings in relief to help preserve a 4-2 Fresno State win over San Jose State Friday at Municipal Stadium.
The Bulldogs improved to 15-21 overall and 3-4 in the WAC while the Spartans dropped to 15-16-1 on the season and 5-8 in conference play. The win was Fresno State's third straight league victory.
Quinonez relieved starter David Griffin with one out in the sixth and runners on second and third and proceeded to wiggle out of the jam, capped by a bases loaded strikeout of Ryan Angel. Quinonez also fanned two in both the eighth and ninth innings. Sophomore righty Matt Garza recorded the final two outs of the game to preserve the lead and notch his conference high tying fourth save of the year. Griffin (4-2) scattered two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two over 5 1/3 innings to earn his fourth win of the season.
San Jose State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first innnig on a two-run single by designated hitter Josh Lansford. Fresno State tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from sophomore designate hitter Kent Sakamoto and an error by SJSU left fielder Ryan Angel to plate Bulldog freshman infielder Christian Vitters. Vitters had a career high four hits, going 4-5 with three singles and a double. Senior infielder Ryan Haag was 2-4 including a single in the sixth to mark career hit No. 200.
Senior catcher Brandon Marcelli gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game on a run scoring single with two outs in the fifth. Sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett led off the ninth with his team high six home run of the season to give Fresno State a two-run cushion at 4-2.
San Jose State starter Matt Durkin (5-3) suffered the loss allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out eight over eight innings.
The series continues Saturday at 1 p.m. Fresno State sophomore righthander Michael Cooper (2-5, 5.21) is scheduled to oppose Spartans righty Corey Cabral (4-4, 4.76).
