FRESNO, Calif. - Gil Infante pitched a career high 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief to preserve a 13-8 Fresno State victory over Hawai'i in the series finale Sunday at Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs improved to 19-25 overall and 7-8 in the WAC while the Rainbows dropped to 24-15 on the season and 8-7 in conference play. Coupled with San Jose State's 10-3 win over Nevada Sunday, move one game behind Nevada and Hawai'i for second place.
Infante (1-0) earned his first victory of the year, striking out a career high tying three batters while surrendering just one hit for his outing. The Ventura, Calif., native retired the first 10 batters he faced before a two out single in the ninth to Rocky Russo.
Fresno State jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings keyed a four-run outburst in the first and a two-run single from senior catcher Brandon Marcelli in the second. UH battled back to take a 7-6 lead in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Matthew Inouye.
Trailing 8-6, Fresno State plated five runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run round tripper from Marcelli off UH reliever Guy McDowell. McDowell (1-1), was saddled with his first loss of the year, allowing five runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. Junior infielder David Gomez followed Marcelli with a home run over the right field fence. The back-to-back homers was the second time the Bulldogs had accomplished the feat.
Sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett singled in the first to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. Robnett also socked his team high eighth homer of the year to lead off the eighth.
Brian Finegan and Rocky Russo led the Rainbows' offensive attack with three-hits apiece. Finegan led off the fifth inning with a home run and Russo hit a two-run clout in the third.
The Bulldogs head back on the road next weekend for a three-game series at Louisiana Tech.
