TUSLA, Okla. - The 14th-ranked Fresno State softball team notched a 4-0 Western Athletic Conference win at Tulsa in game one at the Donna J. Hardesty Softball Complex earlier today.
The Bulldogs scored four runs on six hits while the Golden Hurricane had one hit and an error.
All-America pitcher Jamie Southern pitched a no-hitter going into the bottom of the seventh. However, she settled for a one-hitter, her sixth of the season and 15th of her career, while walking one and striking out eight. She improved to 21-5 overall and collected her 16th shutout win.
At the plate, she put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard first when she connected for her fourth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the first inning.
Freshman catcher Nichole Willis posted a multiple hit game for the Bulldogs after going 2-4 while sophomore All-America shortstop Christina Clark scored two runs after going 1-3.
Sophomore third baseman Veronica Green and freshman left fielder Rachael Donaldson also had a hit a piece while they each picked up a double.
Tulsa's Ami Day took the loss in the circle and fell to 7-7 overall after allowing four runs on sixth hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Shortstop Stacey Walkingstick got the lone hit for the Golden Hurricane after she beat out an infield hit to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
Fresno State plated two runs in the first and added two in the seventh in its 32nd win of the year.
In the first, Clark drew a walk after taking the count to 3-2. Southern came to the plate and drove the first pitch to left center for an early 2-0 lead.
In the seventh, the Bulldogs scored two runs on two outs as Tulsa committed two fielding errors. After Day got Green and Donaldson out to start the seventh, junior first baseman Shasta Lewis walked. Clark drove a pitch to left field to put runners on first and second. Southern then followed with a shot to mid center. However, the Golden Hurrican second baseman, center fielder and right fielder nearly collided going for the ball, and, in doing so, the ball eluded them as Lewis and Clark scored on the play.
In the bottom half of the frame, Walkingstick withstood a 1-2 count and beat out an infield hit up the third base line. Southern induced the next Tulsa batter into a pop up before striking out the final two batters.
