IRVINE, Calif. - The Anteaters scored five runs in the first and got a strong performance from the pitching staff as 10th-ranked UC Irvine defeated Fresno State 5-1 Tuesday at Anteater Ballpark. With the win, UCI improved to 20-6-1 while the Bulldogs fell to 14-21.
Nine UCI batters came to the plate in the first and scored on three hits and a bases-loaded walk. Anteater shortstop Kyle Ryckebosch capitalized on starting pitcher Eddie Romero's (1-1) wild pitch, putting runners on second and third, and hit a single past the shortstop to cap the scoring for the Anteaters. Romero was chased from the game after two innings, striking out two and walking four. Ryckebosch finished 1 for 3 on the night while senior second baseman Matt Fisher picked up two hits and scored once for the Anteaters.
UC Irvine pitcher Justin Cassel was solid, tossing five shutout innings, striking out five and yielding five hits while walking none. Cassel improved to 2-2 on the season.
Fresno State got a run in the seventh on DeAndre Miller's two-out triple off of reliever Michael Koehler to score Kyle Wilson.
UCI's David Huff and Jimmy Alstot finished the game, allowing just one hit in a combined 2.2 shutout innings in relief.
