HONOLULU - Paced by a 15-hit offensive attack and another strong outing by starter Matt Garza, Fresno State defeated Hawaii 7-2 in the series opener Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Bulldogs improved to 23-28 overall and 11-11 in the WAC while the Rainbows slipped to 29-18 on the year and 12-10 in conference play.
Garza scattered two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over seven-plus innings to notch his team best fifth win of the year.
Fresno State broke out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run single by freshman outfielder Nick Moresi. The Rainbows tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Brian Finegan and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Sansaver.
Bulldog junior designated hitter David Gomez snapped the tie in the sixth with a one-out double to plate sophomore Richie Robnett who extended his hitting streak to 25 games with his 21st double of the season. Freshman infielder Christian Vitters and senior catcher Brandon Marcelli tallied run scoring hits to chase UH starter Ricky Bauer.
Bauer (8-3) allowed six runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings to suffer his third loss of the year. Moresi (2-3) capped the four-run rally with an RBI single to left as Fresno State collected a season high tying six hits in the inning.
The series continues Friday at 9:30 p.m PDT. Fresno State freshman lefthander Brandon Miller (4-3, 5.32) is scheduled to oppose Rainbows righthander Stephen Bryant (7-3, 2.67).
