FRESNO, Calif. -
Fresno State softball's All-America shortstop Christina Clark (Santa Ana, Calif.), junior All-America pitcher/utility Jamie Southern (Clovis, Calif.) and senior designated player Lori Hoffman (Benicia, Calif.) were named to the 2004 All-West Region teams this afternoon.
As the only three selected from the Western Athletic Conference, both Clark and Southern garnered first team all-region honors while Hoffman was selected second team. All three now go on for All-America consideration in their respective position.
Clark, who was a First Team All-West Region as a freshman, has put together a record year. Hitting a new school and WAC single-season home run mark (22) while becoming Fresno State' all-time career home run leader (37), she picked up her 100th career RBI while posting her 20th multiple hit game last time out.
Virtually leading the team in every offensive category, Clark has also set single-game records in home runs (3), total bases (12) and home runs in league play (10) while being nationally ranked in home runs per game, slugging percentage, runs per game and batting average during the year.
Southern, who is named to her third straight All-West Region First Team, continues to lead the nation in ERA. Recording her 60th career shutout versus Nevada, she is averaging 8.35 strikeouts per seven innings while going 12-0 with a save in her last 13 appearances.
With 20 shutouts on the year, Southern owns season-best streaks of 51.2 innings without a walk, 56.2 innings without an earned run and 31.1 scoreless innings. Having been nationally ranked in ERA, victories and saves this season, Southern has performed at the plate as well with 19 multiple hit games and tying the school's and WAC's single-game mark for runs scored (4).
Hoffman, who garners all-region honors for the first time, is the third Bulldog to be an all-region pick as she joins Gina LoPiccolo and Michelle Bolt. Named First Team All-WAC in 2003, Hoffman is batting nearly .380 in her last nine games. She also has made five starts in the circle and is 5-2.
The three All-West Region picks are the most since 2000 when all three Bulldogs were selected first team. The program has produced 87 all-region picks with 73 coming under 19th-year head coach Margie Wright.
