FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (291/+7) dropped to third place after the second round of the WAC Championships, falling behind leader SMU (291/E) and UTEP (288/+6) in second.
Senior Jeremy Moreno (71-71/E) carded the lowest round for the Bulldogs, again making even par to move him from 11th to tie for sixth. Senior Chad Spencer (70-73/+1) dropped from sixth to a 12th-place tie after shooting two-over.
Junior George McKean (72-75/+5) dropped four places to tie for 24th and sophomore Mark Modglin (71-77/+6) is currently six-over and tied for 28th. Junior Ryan Carter (78-72/+8) improved his game by six strokes, jumping from a 45th-place tie to share the 33rd spot.
"The golf course was difficult today," Fresno State head coach Mike Watney said. "You could see that by a lot of teams' high scores."
"The guys are a little disappointed because we had momentum for a while and then we gave it back."
Boise State's Graham DeLaet (71-68/-3) surpassed Tulsa's David Inglis for the lead position, carding a low round of 68 to end the day 3-under. Inglis (67-73/-2), SMU's Scott Abbott (69-71/-2) and UTEP's James Allenby (71-69/-2) are tied for second place.
Watney expects the final round of the championships to exceed the difficulty of the prior two, with challenging pin placements at each hole. He also said a Fresno State victory is still within reach.
"We have played in several tournaments where we came back strong," he said. "We are in striking range again. Many times players are able to pick up seven strokes in the last round - it is not impossible to do."
The Bulldogs are scheduled to tee off from the first hole tomorrow at 8:40 a.m.
