Fresno, Calif. - Freshman lefthander Brandon Miller struck out a career high tying five as Fresno State defeated San Jose State 14-4 Friday night at Beiden Field. Miller (4-3) scattered three runs on seven hits over a career high seven innings to earn his fourth victory of the year.
The Bulldogs improved to 22-27 overall and 10-10 in the WAC while the Spartants dropped to 19-28-1 on the year including 7-16 in conference play.
Bulldog sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett pushed his hitting streak to a WAC-best 23 games with a run scoring single in the first, keying a six-run rally. Fresno State sent 10 men to the plate in the inning and scored on run scoring hits by Nick Moresi and Christian Vitters, a sacrifice fly from Chase Moore and a bases loaded walk to Kent Sakamoto to chase Spartans starter Brandon Dewing. Dewing (1-9) surrendered six runs on four hits and three walks in an inning of work to suffer his ninth loss of the year.
Fresno State senior infielder Kyle Wilson led off the third inning with his fifth home run of the year. Robnett socked his team high 12th home run of the year with a two-run blast in the sixth while sophomore outfielder Chase Moore added a two-run shot of his own in the seventh. Moore also doubled and tripled to record a career high tying three hits. Senior infielder Chris Patrick his his third big fly of the year to open the eighth.
With 16 hits on the night, the Bulldogs tallied a double digit hit total for the sixth game in a row. In addition, the club collected seven doubles, one shy of the school.
San Jose State plated four runs in the eighth including a two-run single by infielder Ruben Martinez who was one of three Spartans with two hits on the night.
The Bulldogs will look for their first series sweep of the season Sunday at 1 p.m. Fresno State sophomore righthander Michael Cooper (2-7, 5.84) is scheduled to oppose Spartans righty Matt Durkin (6-4, 4.84).
