Bulldogs Drop Series Finale to San Jose State, 6-3

FRESNO, Calif. - Matt Durkin scattered three runs and struck out four over eight solid innings to lift San Jose State to a 6-3 over Fresno State in the series finale Sunday at Beiden Field. Durkin (7-4) earned his seventh win of the year, allowing nine hits and a walk for his outing.
The Spartans improved to 20-28-1 on the season and 8-16 in the WAC while the Bulldogs dropped to 22-28 overall including 10-11 in conference play.
Brad Kilby retired the side in order in the ninth to notch his sixth save of the season.
San Jose State took its first lead of the series with three runs in the top of the first on run scoring hits by Josh Lansford and Scott Niheu. Lansford (4-5) also singled home a run in the second and Niheu clubbed his fourth home run in the third to stake the Spartans to a 5-0 lead.
Bulldog sophomore outfielder Richie Robnett scored the club's first run of the game in the third inning with his 13th home run of the year. Robnett went 3-3 to extend his hitting streak to a WAC-best 24 games. A run scoring ground out by senior infielder Chris Patrick and a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Chris Patrick in the fifth trimmed the deficit in half at 5-3.
Anthony Contreras (3-5) drove in the Spartans' sixth run of the game with a one-out single in the sixth.
Bulldog starter Michael Cooper (2-8) suffered his eighth loss of the year allowing four runs on six hits over two innings.
The Bulldogs travel to Hawaii for their final road trip of the year next weekend. The series begins Thursday night at 9:35 p.m. PDT.
