FRESNO, Calif. - Chuck Smallwood, who coached the women's equestrian team at Fresno State for the last year, has resigned his position effective June 28, 2004. A national search for a replacement will be conducted.
"We are very grateful to Chuck for his contributions to the program," said Athletics Director Scott Johnson. "We made great strides this year and there is solid program in place in which to build."
Smallwood joined the Fresno State program Sept. 24, 2003 as head coach. Under his direction, the Bulldogs won the Zone 8, Region 1 championship and were reserve national champions in Western and placed sixth nationally in English. Two Bulldogs finished in the top 10 at the National Reigning Horse Association finals. The Bulldogs placed fourth in the Western division and 8th place in English at the NCAA championship event.
"We had a great postseason and achieved success as a team," said Smallwood. "I'm very pleased to have been back with the program and help get it back on track. I can now move on and work on some other things in my life that I had put on hold."
Assistant coach Trista Armstrong will take over as interim head coach until a new coach is selected.
