Fresno, Calif. - The Bulldogs put forth another competitive effort, staying close to New Mexico State in two early games, but was unable to answer the Aggie attack and lost in three games 27-30, 28-30 and 23-30. Fresno State was able to get good production from their outside hitters, but solid hitting from New Mexico State coupled with good defense from the Aggie back row led to the defeat. Angela Wiggins was the hot hand for the Bulldogs, entering the match in game two and making 11 kills with a .292 hitting percentage.
The first two games of the match were evenly played, and the first game was the closest as neither team gained more than a four point edge through the entire game. The Bulldogs were the ones that held the early edge, taking a 13-10 lead after an attack error from Tanya Allen, but New Mexico State tied the Bulldogs at 16, and took their first lead since 7-6 at 20-19, and held onto the lead for the remainder of the match despite a late run from Fresno State to bring the game within one at 28-27.
The second game featured more of the same fight from Fresno State, as the Bulldogs fell behind 7-2 early in the game, but were able to bring the score even at 8 apiece following an attack error by Kim Oguh. Fresno State was unable to hold that momentum however, and lost a tight game two 30-28. New Mexico State responded with a renewed level of play in the third match, and after taking an early lead swept the match with a 30-23 win. The Aggies were led by Kim Oguh, who had 17 kills on the night, as well as libero Jordan Bostic and defensive specialist Krystal Torres who had 23 and 16 digs respectively.
Fresno State looks to get a split on the week when they face Louisiana Tech at home on Saturday. Due to preparations for the football game, the entrance to the North Gym at Cedar and Barstow will be closed at 11, a.m., so fans are asked to enter the campus at Chestnut and Barstow instead. That match will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and will be televised on Comcast channel 14.
Game 1 Recap - Fresno State opened the first game on top after a quick kill from Alisha McKee got the Bulldogs off to a fast start. Neither team was able to gain a strong advantage throughout the game though. Ties at 3, 5, 6, and 8 marked the first ten points for both teams until the Bulldogs were able to start a small rally after a kill from Briana Rempel and a block by Kasie Spencer and Alisha McKee to take a 10-8 lead. After giving up service, the Bulldogs took two straight points, and grabbed two more after a Tanya Allen kill to take a 13-10 lead, the largest of the match for the Bulldogs. New Mexico State brought back the gap though, and the two teams exchanged service until New Mexico State began to pull away just a little, taking a 23-21 lead. Fresno State got the score to 23-22, but then New Mexico State scored four straight points to make the score 27-22, and held on to get the first game win 30-27.
Game 2 Recap - New Mexico State started quickly in the second game, jumping out to an early six one lead before a kill from Alisha McKee was able to stop the Aggie momentum and start a Bulldog run. Fresno State had three blocks from Alison Pitton to help even the match at 8-8. New Mexico State kept Fresno State from grabbing the lead though, as Kim Oguh made a kill to make the score 9-8, and led the Aggies to a 19-13 lead. Fresno State was once again able to pull even with New Mexico State at 22 all after a back row kill from Cassie Gilford, but a kill from Tanya Allen kept the Bulldogs from pulling ahead, and New Mexico State jumped out to a 27-23 lead. Fresno State made a late rally to make the score 28-29, but another Allen kill closed out the game for the Aggies.
Game 3 Recap - Two competitive games were not matched very well by the third. New Mexico State took a 10-5 lead early on the strength of two Kim Oguh kills, and cruised out to a 20-9 lead. Fresno State cut the lead back behind Cassie Gilford's serving and two block assists to 20-13, but the Bulldogs could never bring the score back within more than seven points. The two teams stayed even through the rest of the match, and the Aggies took the third and final game 30-23.
