FRESNO, Calif. - Beginning today, the Bulldogs will participate in the Wilson/ITA Northwest Women's Regional Championship hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. It is an exciting time for the team as it prepares for the spring season with highly competitive events this fall. The Bulldogs have already competed in the Bulldog Classic, the Cal-Nike Invitational and the ITA All-American Tournament. Following this weekend's regional tournament, there remain two more opportunities for competition this fall.
In singles play, Fresno State will be represented by seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter and freshman Vanessa Heroux and Bruna Paes. Winterhalter is seeded eighth in the 128-player field and has a first-round bye. Her first match will begin today at 4 p.m. PT, playing the winner of the Kate Harden (Saint Mary's)/Lizzy Kenfield (Pacific) match. Winterhalter is currently 5-2 in singles play this fall.
Sainz is also a seeded player, getting the No. 14 seed. She will play at 4:15 p.m. PT, facing the winner of Lindsey Griffin (UP) vs. Patricia Ruman (Idaho). Sainz is 3-2 in singles play this year.
Paes, getting a first round bye, has a second round matchup vs. Kaitlin Callan of Davis at 2:15 pm PT. Heroux will play Marie Carrol of Eastern Washington at 1 p.m.
In doubles play, the Sainz/Winterhalter duo is the top seeded team in the 64-team field. The two ladies are 10-1 this season already, primed to make more noise on the national scene. Paes and Heroux will play together in doubles as well.
The singles finalists and the doubles winner earn automatic births in the National Indoor Championships scheduled for Nov. 4-6 in Columbus, Ohio.
