FRESNO, Calif. - In the second day of action at the Wilson/ITA Women's Regional Championships in Palo Alto, Calif., the Bulldogs saw senior Lucia Sainz advance to the quarterfinals of the singles draw. Sainz played well both of her matches including a three set battle in the round of 16. After dropping the first set to Marjolein SvandeVen in tiebreakers, Sainz controlled the rest of the match for a 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-3 victory.
"Lucky got off to a rough start," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "But then she settled down and really started to play her game. She stepped up to really stay in command of the match."
Senior Katharina Winterhalter won her first match of the day beating Cassy Fabiani of San Francisco 6-1, 6-0. Then in the round of 16, she suffered a disappointing loss to Dominika Dieskova of Oregon 6-4, 6-2. She was in control for most of the match, but just failed to convert shots into points.
In doubles play, Sainz and Winterhalter won convincingly, 8-3 over Kate Harden and Kristen Kummer of Saint Mary's. Tomorrow, the duo will play Oregon at 9 a.m. PT.
