FRESNO, Calif. - Seniors Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter head to the semifinals of the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships after an 8-5 win over Dominika Dieskova and Ana Olivos of Oregon. The duo will play tomorrow against Celia Durkin and Amber Liu of Stanford at 9 a.m. The winner will then play in the final immediately following at approximately 10:15 a.m. The doubles winner will automatically qualify for the Indoor Championships in November, although, Sainz and Winterhalter have already have received an invitation to the event.
"Lucky at Kath started off a little slow with their returns," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "But then they really stepped it up to take control of the match. They started to play their game and they pulled through for the win."
Sainz also played in singles on Saturday, losing in a lengthy match to Durkin of Stanford. She won the first set 6-4, but then dropped the second set 4-6. Finally in the third set, Durkin came out on top winning 7-5.
