Bulldog Equestrian Team Prepares for Home Show

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State will host nearly 170 competitors from eight different schools for the Fresno State Invitational Feb. 20-21. The events begin at 8 a.m. each day. Competing in the event will be Stanford, UC Davis, Cal Poly, College of the Sequoias, Sierra Nevada, University Nevada and UC Santa Cruz. The English events will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday with the Western events begin at noon. Monday's Western events will begin at 8 a.m. Admission is free.
Bulldogs To Watch
Several key Bulldogs will be competing this weekend in the first home event of the year. Some of the top performers in the Western events for the Bulldogs have been: junior Brenna Burris, Farson, Wyo.; senior, Beth Knapp, Durham, Calif.; senior Kayla Merritt, Quartz Hill, Calif.; senior Jodie Stabbe, Sanger, Calif.; and freshman Sara Barnes, Merced, Calif.
Top Bulldog performers in the English competition will be: junior Katie Frost, North Vancouver, B.C.; sophomore Morgan McDonald, Vancouver, B.C.; freshman Anne Schroeder, Carona Del Mar, Calif.; junior Amy Simmons Santa Paula, Calif.; and senior Leyla Mundy Santa Barbara, Calif.
Bulldogs Earn High Point Status at IHSA Region 1 Event
The Bulldog Equestrian team won the championship at the IHSA Region I meet held Feb. 13 at the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. There were eight teams in the competition. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was junior Brenna Burris, Farson, Wyo., who claimed the High Point Championship, by winning both the Reining and Open Western Horsemanship events. Burris led 14 Bulldog who placed in the top four of their events. The Bulldogs took the top three spots in Reining, with freshman Sara Barnes, Merced, Calif., competing in her first collegiate event, placing second and senior Beth Knapp, Durham, Calif., was third in that event. Knapp also earned second place in the Open Western Horsemanship competition. Four Bulldogs earned first place honors at the show, led by junior Amy Simmons, Santa Paula, Calif., Novice Western Horsemanship; junior Jessica Miller, Madera, Calif., Intermediate B Western Horsemanship; and sophomore Erin Buffington, Simi Valley, Calif., Intermediate A Western Horsemanship. Jodie Stabbe, a senior from Reedley, Calif., won her first collegiate event, competing in the Advanced Western Horsemanship. Freshman Marybeth Brown, Bakersfield, Calif., placed first in beginning horsemanship.
Looking Ahead
The Bulldogs have an English/Western show Feb. 26 at Cal Poly before returning home to host the University of Georgia March 12. The Dogs will host the regional championships March 13.
