Fresno, Calif. - Bulldog Baseball went a long ways towards getting healthy on Friday Night at Beiden Field. Fresno State exploded for nine runs in the third inning on the way to a 12-3 victory over Chicago State. Junior Matt Garza looked impressive on the mound as well, pitching seven innings and striking out a career high 12 batters. Also of note were hitting performances of Nick Moresi, who was two for two along with DeAndre Miller who was 4-5 with two doubles.
Fresno State got off to a solid start in the first inning, as DeAndre Miller hit the first of his two doubles, and Nick Moresi brought him in with the first of his three RBI on the night to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Chicago State starter Robert Vargas limited the damage to just that run for the first two innings, but the Bulldogs would come alive in the third inning. Vargas got the first out on a groundout, but the fireworks started with DeAndre Miller again, who beat out a drag bunt down the left field line to get on base, and then stole second. From just that start, the Bulldogs managed to get all nine batters around the bases for runs, including the seasons first two triples. Those were hit consecutively by Chase Moore and Doug Fister, and gave the Bulldogs and Garza as much cushion as they would need.
Head Coach Mike Batesole started to substitute the starters for youth, and allowed Garza to continue to pitch his game, which was plenty. Garza, in what was easily his best start of the season, looked like the Friday ace this staff has been looking for. He pitched seven full innings, gave up no earned runs, scattered four hits, and walked no one while strking out a career high 12 batters in the win.
Fresno State will look to continue their recent success against the Cougars tomorrow as they play two against the Cougars. The double-header will start at 1 p.m. at Beiden Field.
