Fresno, Calif. - Despite getting out to a slow start, the Fresno State baseball team finally put together their hits in a 8-4 win over the visiting UCLA Bruins on Saturday. The Bulldogs were lifted by a six-run fifth to give them a 6-2 lead which they would never relinquish. Rudy Quinonez picked up his first win of the year out of relief, and Michel Cooper picked up the save for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State would fall behind early, as the first batter that the Bruins sent to the plate, Will Pennial, would hit a double and move to third on a wild pitch. Pennial would then score off of a Eric Taylor single to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.
The Bruins would add another run off of Brandon Miller in the fifth, as Pennial would round the bases once again. Rudy Quinonez would come in and would retire the side, getting the Bulldogs out of a jam with runners on second and third.
Getting runners on base hasn't been a problem for the Bulldogs in this series, and David Gomez finally delivered for the 'dogs with men on base, hitting a three-run shot to right, giving the Bulldogs the lead 3-2. The Bulldogs would load the bases again and Will Thomas came through delivering a three-run double off the wall in left to give the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead.
The Bulldogs would add two more runs, one in the seventh after a Christian Vitters double and Nick Moresi would hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot in the eighth. UCLA would post two more runs in the ninth, but Michael Cooper came in for the last out and closed the door on the Bruins.
With the series tied at one, the Bulldogs will play the deciding game tomorrow at Beiden Field, starting at 1:00 p.m.
