Arizona State Head Coach Charli Turner Thorne: "I thought this was a perfect way to start the tournament. I think we had some lapses on defense, but we can tighten that. The thing I liked best was the balance. Our guards did a good job of getting the ball to our big people. We've had some big leads this year and we knew they would make a run. I wasn't really worried when they got it down to nine. This team has too much character. We were pretty much in control from the start. We are very good at grinding out close games so this was a good start. We shot so well at the start. Their (Western Kentucky) top player Eckerle (Miranda) was very good and so was Cazee. We were able to shut down the others.
Arizona State :Emily Westerlund: I think when I hit that first shot was important. Our guards did a great job of getting me the ball. We came out and shot well and may have caught them a little off guard. After I hit the first shot I started looking to shoot more. I think in any game any good shooter can make one and then go o to 10 after that., but I just wanted to get good looks and I was satisfied that I was getting passes in good sports.".
Arizona State Kristen Kovesdy: Our guards kept getting me the ball and we were all shooting so well right from the start.
Eastern Kentucky Head Coach Larry Joe Inman: I Just think they came out on fire. We did expect them to shoot that well. I don't think we were intimidated by the game, but by their shooting. It was like shock and awe. Once we settle down we played well, but by that time we were down 15 to 17 points. I appreciated the way our girls came back in that second half and got it down to nine. I told them that it was a great ride and I know we are better than what we showed. I think Arizona State is capable of getting to the sweet 16, but then it gets tough. They have good overall balance.
EKU Miranda Eckerle: They played great defense and we missed some early shots and got behind early. We made a run, but they had too much of a lead.
EKU Ashley Cazee: Not much we can say. We can play better but their defense had a lot to do with our lack of scoring.
