Stanford Head Coach Tara VanDerVeer: They did what weve been watching them do knocking down threes. We had a battle on our hands at halftime and I was really proud of the way we played the second half, We were extremely aggressive. Candise did a great job defensively. She and Kelly and Brooke blocked some shots and we played the way we want to play the whole tournament. Got the ball inside and really executed well. I think in the first half we were a little tight waiting all day to play. Usually we are yelling to guard inside, but Santa Clara was hitting threes. So the second half we did a better job.
As for Candise this is how she plays. I thought she was a little rushed in the first half, but she plays both ends of the floor with great confidence. She brings great energy, she is as very special player and a very special person.
Stanford's Candise Wiggins: I was a little nervous at the start I always am. We had to wait a long time to play today. I tried to take a nap but I just stared at the dark. They were an aggressive team, but it all worked out. Once I got focused I was okay.
Stanford's Sebnem Kimyacioglu: I can't really describe the emotions of playing against my sister. She did a great job and I love her and am proud of her.
Santa Clara Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson: Obviously, we don't feel like we gave it our best performance. Over the season, we've made progress and we're a young team. I see a bright future for Bronco basketball. In the first half, even though our three-point shots were going down, we knew we needed to do a better job of attacking the basket. Our half-court defense slacked off a little bit and I think that affected us. Candice Wiggins is difficult to contain. She plays with a lot of energy and a lot of intensity. She doesn't stop. We wanted to take her out of her strengths but ultimately, she had a lot of success. This was a tremendous experience for our team. We got a taste of what it's like to be in the NCAA's and hopefully, we can remember that at the beginning of our season next year.
Santa Clara's Quinn Thomas: The first 15 minutes was as well as we did all game but I've seen us play better. Candice is a great athlete. We did what we could to stop her
Santa Clara's Michelle Cozad: We did what we could to fluster her (Wiggins). Her being able to get to the free throw line a lot was a huge factor.
