FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 23/18 Fresno State softball team wasted no time in collecting an 8-0, 5 inning victory over Dartmouth.
In a one hour span, the Bulldogs notched eight runs on nine hits to improve to 19-7 overall.
The main story of the game belongs to senior All-America pitcher Jamie Southern, who threw her second no-hitter and first perfect game of the year. The no-no was Southern's sixth overall and the perfect game was her fourth as a Bulldog.
On a bigger scale, she became the 40th NCAA Division I hurler to reach the 100 career win plateau. While tallying her seventh shutout in 10 victories this year, Southern continues to move up in five different NCAA Division I pitching categories.
With 67 career shutouts, she sits No. 11 all-time. With 1,152 career strikeouts to rank 18th overall, Southern moved up to No. T21 in complete games (122) and No. 32 in innings pitched (955.2).
In the program's history, there now has been 57 no-hitters and 13 perfect games. Of the 13 perfect games, eight have come at home. Of those eight, Southern has thrown three of them.
The last time Southern threw a no-hitter was the season-opening game against Utah in which Fresno State won 5-0 at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament on Feb. 17. The last time she tossed a perfect game was Feb. 15, 2004 against No. 18 Texas A&M at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Tempe, Ariz.
Fresno State jumped on Darmouth with a four-run first inning attack before tacking on its final four in the fourth.
In the first, sophomore left fielder Rachael Donaldson tripled to right center to knock in two Bulldogs and freshman first baseman Shauna Johnson picked up a RBI single. The other run came on an error by the Big Green catcher.
In the fourth, pinch runner Katrina Jacques scored on a wild pitch. Southern posted a RBI single as did sophomore catcher Nichole Willis. The final run came on another Big Green error.
Starting pitcher Ashley Thorfinnson took the loss and fell to 0-3 overall as she allowed eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits while walking one in 3.1 innings of work.
Southern improved to 10-2 and struck out six of 15 batters faced.
Southern and Johnson each had multi hit games for Fresno State while Donaldson recorded two of the team's five RBI.
