What's Coming Up
Fresno State begins a very busy two-week stretch on Monday with a contest against 18th-ranked Harvard at 1 p.m. in Los Angeles. The Bulldogs then return to the road later this week with two matches in Williamsburg, Va. On Friday, 56th-ranked Fresno State takes on No. 66 Virginia Commonwealth at 10:30 a.m. PT and then faces 14th-ranked William and Mary on Saturday at 9 a.m. Fresno State (8-5) is riding a season-long four-match winning streak and plays six times in the next two weeks.
What Happened Recently
The Bulldogs won their only match of last week, a 4-3 nailbiter at Long Beach State. Lucia Sainz battled through the flu to take a 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (2) victory at No. 3 singles in the clincher. Fresno State was playing with only two healthy bodies due to injuries (Lucia Tallo and Jacqui Haskett) and illness (Sainz, Courtney Jantz). The Bulldogs actually trailed 3-2 in the dual but received the clutch win from Sainz along with a big three-set victory by Haskett at No. 5.
One Milestone, One Impressive Streak
The Bulldogs' current four-match winning streak has been inspired by two very impressive runs from the middle of the team's lineup. Her match-clinching victory against Long Beach State was her 20th of the year in singles, a team high. The junior is only two wins away from matching her total for all of last year, when she went 22-13 (15-9 dual) and was a second-team All-WAC honoree. Also impressive of late has been Jacqui Haskett. The freshman has won four singles matches in a row to improve her spring mark to 9-4. After going just 1-4 during the fall, Haskett has anchored the No. 5 position in the lineup, winning eight of 11 matches.
Bulldogs to See Familiar Face
Fresno State will be squaring off against a familiar face Saturday when the team finds themselves in Williamsburg, Va. On that day, the Bulldogs will take on 14th-ranked William and Mary, coached by Kevin Epley, who was the head coach at Fresno State from 2001-03. Under Epley, the Bulldogs went 55-19. He departed in September 2003, just after hiring Simon Thibodeau - the 2004 WAC Coach of the Year at Fresno State - as his assistant.
