DENVER- Junior forward Amy Parrish (Hanford, Calif.) was named first team All-WAC on Sunday afternoon, as the Western Athletic Conference announced its postseason women's basketball award winners.Parrish becomes the first Fresno State player to earn All-WAC first team accolades since Lindsay Logan accomplished the feat during the 2000-01 campaign. The Bulldogs were without an All-WAC selection last season.
After finishing 13-16 overall last season, Fresno State enters this week's WAC Tournament at 19-9 overall and placed fourth in the conference at 10-8. An important part of Fresno State's turnaround can be credited to the stellar play of Parrish, who joined the Bulldogs this year after two seasons at Reedley Junior College.
Parrish led the Bulldogs in scoring with 13.6 ppg and rebounding with 6.9 rpg. In conference play, she averaged 16.4 ppg and 8.1 rpg. Parrish scored in double-figures in 21 of the team's 28 games this season and recorded four double-doubles, the most recent of which came in a 22-point, 13-rebound performance against Louisiana Tech on Feb. 3.
The first team has one repeat performer from last year with Tulsa's Jillian Robbins making her second appearance on the all-WAC first team in as many years. Louisiana Tech junior Tasha Crain makes her first appearance on the all-WAC team on the first team. Crain was also named the WAC Player of the Year. SMU's Janielle Dodds and San Jose State's Lamisha Augustine round out the first team.
The all-WAC second teamers were Lakiste Barkus, Louisiana Tech; Amber Jackson, San Jose State; Lauren Neaves, Rice; Amy Sanders, Hawai'i; and Michelle Woods, Rice. Neaves was the only second teamer who has earned an honor before. She was named to the first team last season.
Rice's Cristy McKinney captured her first Coach of the Year honor, leading the Lady Owls to a 14-4 league record and an overall record of 21-8. McKinney is in her 13th season at Rice. The Lady Owls enter the WAC tournament with a nine-game winning streak.
Fresno State, seeded No. 4 in this week's WAC Tournament, will face No. 5-seeded SMU (19-9, 10-8) in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, Mar. 9, at 2:30 p.m. at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nev.
