FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State dropped only 21 games in singles and swept all three doubles matches in cruising to a 7-0 victory over Portland on Sunday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs were never threatened in the first ever meeting between the two schools. It was Fresno State's third win in a row after losing three straight.
Lucia Tallo defeated Alyson Tyson 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, in the process picking up her 76th career singles win. Her victory yesterday in Fresno State's win over Loyola Marymount moved her into sole possession of fifth place on the school's all-time wins list. She had been tied at 74 with Amy Gallagher (1991-95).
The senior now is looking up in the record books only at Dora Djilianova (129 wins), Liesl Fichtbauer (102), Shanna Peete (98) and Kim Niggemeyer (94).
Tallo entered the 2004-05 season with 65 wins and has picked up 11 this year, a number lower than previous seasons primarily due to a wrist injury that has hampered her play nearly the entire spring. After the match against Portland, Tallo watched her teammates finish up with all of her right arm wrapped in ice.
"This has been a tough year for Lucia, but I am so proud of the way she has fought through her injuries and picked up some good wins," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "One of the key reasons, if not the biggest reason, this program has the good reputation it has nationally is because of what she has done since she came to Fresno State. Her record speaks for itself -- she is a winner."
Tallo, who also has 80 career wins in doubles, has helped guide Fresno State to the last three WAC Tournament titles and was a key contributor to the team's run to the NCAA Round of 16 a year ago. With this year's conference championship coming up April 22-24 in Honolulu, Tallo will be trying to lead the Bulldogs to their fourth WAC crown in a row, which would be the longest since BYU won four in a row from 1993-96.
Tallo wasn't the only Fresno State player to have an easy go of things against Portland (7-13). In fact, the 55th-ranked Bulldogs (11-8) were as dominating as they have been all season.
At No. 1 singles, 92nd-ranked Katharina Winterhalter dropped Sanja Indic 6-1, 6-2 for her third win in a row. Also finishing their matches in well under an hour were Lucia Sainz and Jacqui Haskett.
"I'm pleased with how we played as a team today," Thibodeau said. "At the top of the lineup, we really took care of business. Lucky (Lucia Sainz) played very well again, which is something she has done all year. You always know you are going to get 100 percent from her, and that example really rubs off on the entire team."
Fresno State wrapped up the win in a tidy 2 hours, 36 minutes, clinching well before all six singles matches were completed. Sainz's win at No. 3 gave the Bulldogs an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
Fresno State plays two matches next weekend to wrap up the regular season. On Saturday, the Bulldogs travel to play at Cal Poly at 11 a.m. and then host Pacific at noon on Sunday in the 2005 home finale.
