What's Coming Up
Fresno State plays two matches this week to close out the regular season. On Saturday, the 55th-ranked Bulldogs (11-8) travel to San Luis Obispo to play Cal Poly at 11 a.m. Then on Sunday, Fresno State play in the 2005 home finale, a noon contest against No. 66 Pacific. It will be the final home match for seniors Lucia Tallo and Courtney Jantz, who both will guide the Bulldogs into the WAC Tournament on April 22-24 in Honolulu.
What Happened Recently
The Bulldogs cruised to three victories last week over West Coast Conference competition. On Saturday, Fresno State knocked off Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's, both by 6-1 scores. One day later, the Bulldogs had an even easier time of things in sweeping past Portland 7-0. Katharina Winterhalter, Lucia Sainz, Courtney Jantz and Fadzai Masiyazi all went 3-0 in singles and doubles as Fresno State brought an end to a three-match winning streak.
WAC Tournament Coming Up
This week concludes the regular season for Fresno State, which wraps up with a home contest against Pacific on April 17. On the horizon is the WAC Tournament, played April 22-24 in Honolulu. The Bulldogs are the three-time defending league champions, the longest streak since BYU won four straight from 1993-96. Fresno State hasn't lost a WAC Tournament match since falling in the 2001 final to TCU by a score of 4-2. The Bulldogs current national ranking of No. 55 makes them the second-highest ranked team in the league, behind only No. 44 Rice.
Sunday is Senior Day
Fresno State concludes the regular season Sunday with a home contest against 66th-ranked Pacific at noon. The match will be an emotional one, with seniors Lucia Tallo and Courtney Jantz making their final appearances at the Wathen Tennis Center. Behind the two, Fresno State has become one of the more nationally recognized programs, making appearances in the NCAA Tournament each year they have been on the team, including a run to the round of 16 last year for just the second time in program history. In addition, the Bulldogs have claimed the last three WAC titles. Tallo enters this week with 76 career singles wins, the fifth-best total in program history, while Jantz has notched 65, the 13th-best total.
