FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 18/16 Fresno State softball team came out flat and was not able to generate any offense at the plate as the Bulldogs dropped its first Western Athletic Conference game of the season to San Jose State, 3-1.
Senior All-America pitcher Jamie Southern, who allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, struck out eight but fell to 16-3 overall as she had her 11-game win streak halted by the Spartans.
Spartan starter Carol Forbes, who took the loss last night, improved to 18-14 overall as she allowed one run (unearned) on three hits while walking one and striking out two.
Using a devastating change up, Forbes held the Bulldogs to one hit through the first five innings.
San Jose State (28-19, 4-4 WAC) scored first with a run in the fourth before adding on two more in the sixth.
In the fourth with one out, shortstop Carlie Hill hit a RBI single to right. The run snapped Southern's unearned run streak at 42.1 innings.
In the sixth with one out and a Bulldog error, SJSU loaded the bases. Designated player Jessica Guillen responded with a two-run single to center field.
Fresno State (28-10, 4-1 WAC) scored its only run on a RBI double by junior All-America shortstop Christina Clark in the sixth.
In the loss, Southern eclipsed the 1,000 innings pitched plateau. She became the 20th NCAA Division I hurler to throw 1,000 or more innings.
