PROVO, Utah - Fresno State (272-271-277-820 at -44) claimed the title at BYU's Cougar Classic on Saturday and had three golfers finish in the top three spots after shooting the best third round of the day at the par-72 Riverside Country Club. The Bulldogs won by eight strokes ahead of BYU (828), while Colorado State came in third with 829.
"It's rare to shoot 44-under-par. This was a little unexpected, but we played great today and had a great performance," head coach Mike Watney said.
Mark Modglin (66-64-72) captured the individual tournament title, the first in his Fresno State career. He shot 72 in the third round for a 202 total at 14-under.
"It's very difficult to win a collegiate tournament," Watney said, "and that just shows how special this victory is for `Modge'. Given the pressure of the situation coming into the third round, his 72 was great."
Ryan Carter (68-68-67) finished in second place at 13-under for the best finish of his career. In the third round he shot a 5-under-par 67 to notch a 203 total. Brian Kelley tied for third with rounds of 67-69-68 for a 204 total at 12-under.
Ryan McDonald (74-70-70) moved from 48th to finish in 33rd after registering 214 (-2). Jon Rosa ended in 52nd with rounds of 71-72-75 and a 218 total.
"Ryan Carter and Brian Kelley played fantastic today," Watney said. "This was a tremendous tournament for the Bulldogs."
There were 100 golfers from 19 teams competing in the Cougar Classic.
Fresno State next competes in the WAC Championships being hosted by Louisiana Tech May 2-4.
