FRESNO, Calif. - Mark Modglin has been selected as the men's Western Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for April 18-24.
Modglin, a junior from Simi Valley, Calif., claimed his first ever tournament victory at last weekend's BYU Cougar Classic after shooting two of the lowest rounds of his career. He fired rounds of 66-64-72 for a 202 (-14). Modglin competed against golfers from top-ranked BYU and Colorado State. He also helped lead Fresno State to an overall 820 (-44) to claim its first victory of the season.
"I was so impressed with the composure that Mark showed playing head-to-head against All-American Oscar Alvarez," head coach Mike Watney said. "When Oscar pulled within one stroke of Mark halfway through the last round, it was Mark who upped his game a notch and pulled away to the victory. A difficult sand save on No. 16 and a birdie on No. 17 were the late-round keys that propelled Mark to victory."
Fresno State next competes in the WAC Championships being hosted by Louisiana Tech May 2-4.
