FRESNO, Calif. - As Bulldog defensive lineman Garrett McIntyre enters his senior season, he is projected as one of the best players in his position in the nation. McIntyre is also being considered for one of college football's most prestigious awards, as he was named to the watch list of the Lombardi Award, given since 1970 to the nation's best lineman. The award is presented by the Houston Rotary Club.
"Garrett McIntyre is a great football player," said head coach Pat Hill. "He deserves to be considered for the Lombardi Award. I think he's the best defensive player in the WAC and I expect even bigger and better things during his senior season."
McIntyre arrived on Fresno State's campus as a walk-on linebacker from South Lake Tahoe, Calif., but over the last three seasons has emerged as one of the top student-athletes in the program. He was one of a handful of WAC players to be selected first-team All-WAC and Academic All-WAC. Last season, McIntyre had 44 tackles, 10.5 for losses and seven quarterback sacks.
As a sophomore, we was selected second-team All-WAC and was selected the to the Sports Illustrated All-Bowl team and the defensive MVP of the Silicon Valley Football Classic win over UCLA. He is a leading candidate for WAC defensive player of the year.
As a three-year starter, McIntyre has 18 career sacks, the seventh-highest total in Bulldog history.
The 2004 Lombardi Award winner was Georgia defensive end David Pollack.
