FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 15/15 Fresno State softball team wrapped up its regular-season and Western Athletic Conference play with a series sweep over UTEP after defeating the Miners, 4-1, in the night cap.
Senior right hander Amanda Wolf pitched the finale and recorded the win and improved to 3-1 on the season. She scattered eight hits while allowing one run and striking out two in 4.2 innings of work.
Freshman left hander Amanda Nesbitt notched her first career save as she allowed just one hit and struck out three against nine batters faced in the final 2.1 innings.
Offensively, freshman first baseman Kristin Sylvester provided the punch when she put the Bulldogs up 3-0 in the fourth after hitting an opposite field three-run home run.
Fresno State scored four runs on eight hits while UTEP scored a run on nine hits.
After Sylvester gave the Bulldogs an early 3-0 lead, the Miners came right back in the top of the fifth. With two outs, third baseman Ashley Bennett singled through the right side to notch the only run of the weekend for UTEP.
In the bottom of the sixth, Fresno State would get that run back. Sophomore catcher Nichole Willis, who went 2-3 with two runs in the night cap, scored on a UTEP fielding error after she led the inning off with a hit to left field.
UTEP starter Kandice Henry took the loss and fell to 0-4 overall after giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits while walking two. The Miners wrapped up their season with a 16-38 overall record and 3-15 mark in league play.
Fresno State (41-10, 17-1 WAC) closed out the season by winning its last 13 straight and 20 of its final 22 games. Earning the conference's NCAA automatic bid last week in Reno, Nev., after capturing their eighth WAC title, the Bulldogs will find out tomorrow if they are playing at home next weekend.
The 2005 NCAA Softball Championship Tournament field will be announced late tomorrow afternoon on ESPNews, anywhere between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
