Americans Win Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship

FRESNO, Calif. - The United States claimed a 31-29 victory Friday at the Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship, which was held at the par-71 Stanford Golf Club in Stanford, Calif. The win became the 10th straight for Team USA.
Fresno State sophomore Laura Luethke shot rounds of 72-78-79 - 229 during the three-day event, in which she participated as one of four women's players on the 12-member U.S. squad.
During Wednesday's first round, Luethke (72) and teammate Annie Young of Oklahoma State (70) defeated Miki Saiki (70) and Chika Yamamoto (74) of Japan 142-144. Thursday's round featured singles competition between Luethke (78) and Yamamoto (72), with Yamamoto securing the victory for Japan. Friday's final round also featured singles competition, with Yamamoto (73) adding more points for Japan after Luethke shot 79.
Luethke, who won three tournaments during her freshman year, was named the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year as well as selected to the first-team all-WAC. A 2005 honorable mention All-American, Luethke contributed two points to Team USA.
The Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship, which is the longest running international collegiate golf event in the world, has just celebrated its 30th anniversary of competition. Founded to promote international goodwill through the game of golf, the tournament's former U.S. players include Jay Haas, Peter Jacobsen, Juli Inkster, Davis Love III, Dottie Pepper and Todd Hamilton.
This year's matches at Stanford mark just the sixth time the matches have been held in the United States, with the Americans claiming all six competitions on U.S. soil.
The United States now holds a 22-8 lead in the all-time series.
