FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State scored two late goals and outshot Cal State Stanislaus 13-6 during a 2-0 exhibition shutout on Thursday night at Bulldog Stadium, kicking off the 2005 campaign. As an exhibition, match statistics were kept but do not count toward regular season totals. Both teams took advantage of the unlimited substitution, three 30-minute period format, translating into extended playing time for reserves.
That formula benefited Fresno State in the second period, as freshman Allison Schroeder came off the bench and gave the `Dogs a 1-0 lead in her debut. Schroeder scored at the 42:24 mark, taking a pass on the wing from senior Barbara Davis and firing it past Cal State Stanislaus keeper Breanna Vaughan.
Fresno State received its second score from a familiar source in junior Cortney Sobrero, the Bulldog's top returning offensive threat from 2004. The first period was unlucky for Sobrero, who came close to finding the net on multiple occasions before scoring in the third period. After corralling a pass from senior Kortney Lewis, Sobrero blasted a shot into the top corner of the net for a 2-0 edge in the 73rd minute.
Sobrero paced the Bulldog attack with five shots, three of which were on goal. Freshman Alison Sill recorded two shots while six other players also registered an attempt. Cal State Stanislaus tallied six shots on the evening: one in the first period, two in the second and three in the third.
The Bulldogs held a 7-1 advantage in the corner kick department and fouls were even at 7-7.
Fresno State's starting lineup included preseason All-WAC selections Sobrero and junior Erika Sugano, in addition to the 2005 Preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year in junior Rochelle Jagdeo.
Junior Jeannette Paine started for the `Dogs in goal, making one save. Junior Angie Larsen followed with a scoreless second half while making two saves and senior Chelsea Mays preserved the shutout in the third. Cal State Stanislaus netminder Vaughan played the entire 90:00.
Fresno State is back in action with its second and final exhibition contest on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Fresno Pacific. The Bulldog's home opener is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 26, against UC Santa Barbara. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
