Bulldogs Fall To No. 21 Cal Poly, 3-0

FRESNO, Calif.- Sharon Day scored twice and Becky Clark converted on a late penalty-kick as No. 21 Cal Poly defeated Fresno State 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Bulldog Stadium.
Fresno State has now dropped four in a row, falling to 1-5-0. Cal Poly, which entered the national rankings at the start of last week, improves to 5-0-1.
Both teams battled through a scoreless first half, with Fresno State holding a 6-4 edge in shot attempts. However, Cal Poly got on the board at the 48:45 mark with Day's first score to make it 1-0.
Day, the Mustang's leading scorer on the season with five, scored both her goals in an 11-minute span on her only two shots of the contest. Her second score came in the 59th minute as she punched in a loose ball from Sierra Simmons.
Cal Poly's Becky Clark beat Bulldog keeper Jeannette Paine in the 86th minute on a penalty kick to round out the scoring.
Fresno State outshot Cal Poly 12-9 on the afternoon but was unable to convert on its chances. Junior Cortney Sobrero led all players with four shots (two on goal) while senior Koleen Anderson and junior Antonea Lugo added two shots apiece.
Fresno State held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Cal Poly committed 14 fouls compared to Fresno State's 12.
Paine made three saves in goal for the `Dogs, while Cal Poly netminder Liz Hill recorded five saves.
Fresno State next travels to Las Vegas, Nev., where it will compete in the UNLV adidas Classic from Sept. 15-17. The Bulldogs begin tournament play by taking on UNLV on Friday at 7 p.m.
