FRESNO, Calif.- Kim Silos' goal with 2:25 remaining in the first overtime period lifted Long Beach State to a 1-0 extra-session victory over Fresno State on Wednesday night at Bulldog Stadium.
Silos recorded five of Long Beach State's six shots on the evening and led all players in that category. She broke free in the middle, moved around a defender, took a pass from Dana Farquhar and blasted a shot past Fresno State keeper Angie Larsen.
Fresno State, which had righted itself after a four-game losing streak by winning back-to-back games over the weekend, falls to 3-6 overall. Long Beach State continues its success, rebounding from a season-opening 3-0 loss at then-No. 3 UCLA to improve to 6-1-1. Wednesday's meeting was the first between the two programs since a 2-0 Fresno State victory back on Sept. 26, 1999.
The Bulldogs held an 8-6 edge in shot attempts, including a 3-1 mark in the opening stanza. Senior Kortney Lewis, junior Cortney Sobrero and freshman Alison Sill registered two shots apiece in the loss.
An evenly-played first half produced a 0-0 halftime score, with the `Dogs holding a 3-1 shot edge. Sobrero rocketed two shots that sailed wide, representing Fresno State's best scoring opportunities.
In the second half, Silos nearly gave the 49ers a 1-0 lead when she took a cross from Farquhar and fired a shot into the goal. The apparent score was nullified, as an offside call gave possession back to Fresno State.
Fresno State had perhaps its best opportunity late in the second half when a header by Sill sailed to the right of LBSU keeper Ramos.
Bulldog defender Rochelle Jagdeo thwarted another 49er scoring threat when she trapped a ball and kicked it out of a scrum near the goal with just seconds remaining in regulation.
Four of Fresno State's eight shots were on goal, compared to three of six by Long Beach State. The 49ers were whistled for 13 fouls; the Bulldogs eight.
Fresno State returns to action on Oct. 2, when it hosts Cal State Bakersfield at 2 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
