FRESNO, Calif.- Despite holding a 15-6 edge in shot attempts, Fresno State was unable to convert a number of scoring opportunities and instead settled for a 0-0 tie with Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.
The Bulldogs have played three straight overtime matches, with the results coming in the form of a win, loss and tie. Fresno State (3-6-1) is also winless in back-to-back contests since winning both games at the UNLV adidas Classic two weeks ago. Cal State Bakersfield (3-8-1) has not won a match since Sept. 20 and is now winless in 16 consecutive road games.
On Sunday, Fresno State controlled the flow of the match but could not close out its scoring chances. A 15-6 shot edge and 8-2 advantage in corner kicks aided in the Bulldog's offensive attack, however Cal State Bakersfield keeper Ashley Witten was equal to the task in goal and made seven saves.
Senior Kortney Lewis, juniors Cortney Sobrero and Antonea Lugo all recorded three shots attempts to lead Fresno State while Cal State Bakersfield's attack was anchored by Moriah Neville's three shots (all on goal).
Bulldog netminder Angie Larsen came up with another strong performance between the posts, making three saves.
Fresno State outshot Cal State Bakersfield 5-2 in the first half, with its best scoring opportunity coming at the 16:58 mark when Sobrero wheeled around a defender and fired a shot that slipped past Witten and ricocheted off the post.
The Bulldogs picked up their offensive attack immediately to open the second half, rattling off four shots in the first five minutes.
With just over 20 minutes remaining in the match, Lewis played a through ball up top to Sobrero, who went up against Witten one-on-one but could not catch up to corral Lewis' pass. The Bulldogs nearly got on the board in the final minute of regulation, as Lewis misfired on her shot attempt.
Two minutes into the first overtime, Cal State Bakersfield's Neville collected a cross from the wing but her shot attempt was wide of the post. Later in the first extra session, Lugo made a run into the box and blasted a shot that sailed wide with time winding down.
Midway through the second overtime, Lewis watched as her potential game-winner glanced off the crossbar. The Bulldogs could not recover the ball and the Roadrunners kicked it out of a scrum in the box.
Fresno State closes out its non-conference schedule on Friday, Oct. 7, when it travels to the Bay Area for a match against No. 5 Santa Clara. The Broncos, a 2004 College Cup semifinalist, will be the first top-10 team that Fresno State has faced since battling No. 4 California back on Sept. 22, 2002.
