Fresno, Calif. - For the second straight match, Cortney Sobrero and Nicole Gutierrez combined for a pair of goals as the Bulldogs beat Boise State 2-0 on Sunday. Fresno State scored a goal in both halves, and the defense and goalkeeper Angie Larsen posted their tenth shutout of the season.
Fresno State controlled play from the beginning of the match, spending the majority of the day in the offensive end and outshooting the Broncos on the day 17-9, including an 8-3 advantage in the first half.
An early chance for the Bulldogs was turned back in the 14th minute, when Aubrey Tennant sent a ball into the zone to senior forward Cortney Sobrero, the team's leading scorer on the season. However, Sobrero's shot was saved by a diving Michaela Morrison, who had eight saves on the night for the Broncos.
The Bulldogs finally got on the board in the 33rd minute, as Alison Sill kicked her second perfect corner kick on the day and Nicole Gutierrez deflected the shot past Morrison for her third goal of the year.
With the lead, Fresno State continued to outshoot the Broncos in the second half, but relied more on their defense to stay as strong as it has been through the season. The Bulldogs controlled play early in the half, but as the period moved on, Boise State responded by taking more aggressive chances, which almost paid off in the 81st minute.
With Boise State moving the ball up the left side of the field, Kaylea Perenon was able to create a shot on goal that was moved out by Larsen, but the Broncos recovered possession and the ball moved in front for a open shot on goal by Kristin Hall. Larsen had already moved into perfect position and was able to move out and make the save, followed by a clear-out by defender Andrea Alires to hold the score at 1-0.
"Angie has played really well for us this year, and that was another great example," said head coach Steve Springthorpe. "As one of our senior leaders on this team, as well as our goalkeeper, we really depend on her to be strong. She came up big today, making that save when it was 1-0."
Spurred on by the defense, forward Alison Sill added her second assist of the day, feeding Cortney Sobrero in the middle who headed the ball over Morrison and into the net to seal the win, improving the Bulldogs' record to 9-5-1 on the year.
"The goal for our team is to put ourselves in a position to win a WAC championship. Every game in our conference schedule is going to be very difficult, and today was no exception. To come out with another conference win was very important."
Fresno State will play three more conference matches on the road before returning home for their final home game of the year against 2005 conference champion Hawai'i. That game will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 29.
