Fresno, Calif. - Senior guard Chantella Perera has been named the initial WAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week as announced by the conference office today. The awards will continue to be given weekly throughout the regular season.
Perera, a senior guard from Watirna, Australia, averaged 22 points per game in two wins over Mountain West Conference opponents Utah and No. 18 BYU, leading the team in scoring for both games. Against 2005-06 Elite Eight participant Utah, Perera scored 23 points, including shooting 11-12 from the free throw line as the Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season.
Continuing her strong play, Perera helped lead the Bulldogs past BYU with 21 points in the home opener, making her first four threes and ending up 4-5 on the night from behind the arc. The win over BYU was the first Fresno State win over a ranked opponent since 1992, when the Bulldogs defeated No. 25 Long Beach State in overtime.
This is the second career WAC Player of the Week honor for Perera. She also won the award last year after scoring 20 points in a key conference victory over San Jose State on February 11.
