FRESNO, Calif. - For the second straight season, Fresno State's junior kicker Clint Stitser has been recognized for his outstanding performance in the classroom and on the field. Stitser was selected to the Academic All-District 8 squad announced today. Stitser was one of seven WAC student-athletes to make the team. The district is comprised of all Division I schools from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
Stitser will be placed on the national Academic All-America ballot. The Academic All-American team is selected annually by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). He has been among the national kicking leaders in his career. He was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2005, given annually to the nation's top place kicker. This season, he has connected on 6-of-10 field goal attempts, making his last four attempts.
Stitser maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA as a business major. He was the only football player on the District 8 squad with a 4.0 GPA, one of only 10 student-athletes from across the nation with a perfect GPA.
"Clint is the type of young man we love to have in our program," said head coach Pat Hill. "He works extremely hard in the in the weight room and on the field. He's a leader on our campus and been perfect in the classroom. You can't ask more than that. We are certainly proud of him and his accomplishments. He's what being an Academic All-American is about. "
This honor adds to Fresno State's already impressive list of academic accomplishments in the Pat Hill era. The Dogs have produced a WAC-best 80 Academic All-WAC players over the last nine years, and the Fresno State football NCAA Academic Progress Rate of 950 ranks fifth-best among the 28 Division I-A institutions in the west. That includes all schools in the Pac-10, WAC and Mountain West Conferences. Stanford is the only program in California with a higher APR score.
Stitser and his team mates return home Saturday against New Mexico State at 2 p.m. Tickets for that game are available by calling (559) 278-DOGS or online at www.gobulldogs.com.
