Chantella Perera Named WAC Player Of The Week

FRESNO, Calif.- Junior guard Chantella Perera (Wantirna, Victoria, Australia) has been named the Xbox Live WAC Player of the Week for Feb. 13, as announced earlier this morning by the conference.
The honor is the first of Perera's career, as she becomes the first Fresno State women's basketball player to claim a WAC Player of the Week since Aritta Lane back on Dec. 15, 2003.
Perera shot 47.1-percent overall in three WAC wins last week (Idaho, Hawai'i and San Jose State), as the Bulldogs improved to 18-5 overall and maintained a share of first place in the WAC at 10-1 with Louisiana Tech.
In a 68-44 win against Idaho on Feb. 6, Perera scored 13 points with three rebounds. Three days later in Honolulu, Perera was one of four Bulldogs to score in double figures as she poured in 11 points and was 3-9 from beyond the arc. Against San Jose State on Feb. 11, she was 5-for-8 from the floor, shooting 62.5-percent while knocking down four triples en route to a game-best 20 points. She was also 6-for-6 from the free throw line, improving to a WAC-best 88.2-percent while being ranked 26th in the nation heading into last week.
Perera ranks third on the team in scoring at 12.0 ppg and is averaging 3.4 rpg. She leads the Bulldogs in three-pointers (38) and assists (69) and has scored in double-figures 15 times overall and in seven consecutive games. Perera has also registered three 20-point games.
Fresno State stands at 18-5 and 10-1 in the WAC heading into Thursday night's game at Nevada.
Other nominees included: Nadia Begay (Boise State), Dalia Solia (Hawai'i), Aarica Ray-Boyd (Louisiana Tech) and Jessica Freeman (Utah State).
